Pentecost Sunday Service 10:00am 01-06-2020
3 May Sunday Worship 10:00am
Today sees us mark the 75th anniversary of the death of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Almost four years ago we sang in our church a commissioned piece: The Tree of Peace by Patrick Larley. It was a weekend to celebrate 30 years of our partnership with the Paul Gerhardt church in Alt Schoenberg. We joined forces to sing this very powerful piece; the first movement of which I have chosen to record at home and send to our brothers and sisters in Berlin. It starts with the simple theme of the passion chorale (melody by Hassler) to the words, in German and translated by Paul Gerhardt: O Haupt Voll Blut Und Wunden - or as we know it, O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded. Over this the words of Bonhoeffer’s speech are sung in a recitative style. Those words: “We are not simply to bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice; we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself.”. Such conviction that ultimately cost him his life.
The movement ends with more words by Paul Gerhardt: “Crosses and sorrow may end with the morrow, stormiest of seas shall sink into peace, the wild winds are hushed, and the sunshine returns.”. Perfect words it seems to sum up what we shall all be going through in the next few days.
