Following the retirement of Bishop Martin Warner, the process to appoint the next Bishop of Chichester is now underway.
As part of the national consultation process, Stephen Knott (the Archbishops’ Secretary for Appointments) and Jonathan Hellewell (the Prime Minister’s Appointments Secretary) are seeking views from across the Diocese of Chichester to help shape the profile of the next Bishop.
A public online consultation meeting will take place via Zoom on:
- Thursday 17 September 2026
- 6.00pm – 7.30pm
This consultation provides an opportunity for members of the wider community to share their perspectives on the opportunities and challenges facing the Diocese, and the qualities, gifts and experience needed in the next Bishop of Chichester.
The Appointment Secretaries will be in listening mode and are keen to hear a broad range of views from people across East and West Sussex. Participants will be invited to reflect on questions such as:
What fills you with hope and encouragement about the ministry and mission of the Church in Sussex?
What challenges and opportunities will the next Bishop encounter?
What gifts, qualities and experience are needed in the next Bishop of Chichester?
How can the Diocese continue to serve and support the communities of Sussex in the years ahead?
We warmly encourage you to attend and to contribute to this important conversation.
