Statement in response to comments made by actor Munya Chawawa on abuse in Chichester

Statement from the Dean of our Cathedral, and the Church of England Churches of Chichester.

You may have heard reports of abuse and antisocial behaviour in Chichester over recent days.

It is distressing to hear or indeed witness such events in a city that we know and love, and which contains much of which we rightly feel proud.

It is our Christian conviction that all people are created in the image of God, and thus endowed with dignity that must always be respected.

We should therefore be concerned and, as necessary, take appropriate action when this dignity is undermined by incidents of, in this case, racist and homophobic abuse.

From the Cathedral that stands in the centre of this city, together with all the Church of England churches of Chichester , we commit everyone who lives and works here, and everyone who visits us, to our ongoing prayer.
